Follow Parrish I had no idea what I was doing. All I knew was that the clouds were very low and I wanted to get some pictures for my portfolio. I was on my way to a job (cleaning out foreclosures to pay the bills while I was building my portfolio). I had my camera with me because I love storms and those first few days in April of 2012 were crazy. As the clouds got even lower, I started to see some circulation and at that point I was hooked. Hopped back in the car and tried to get in position. It dropped down a few times as I chased it over the course of 15 miles. It was scary how many people had no idea what was right above them. I crossed my fingers and took an exit that would hopefully bring me out of the rain and in plain view of the tornado. As I came over a hill, the tornado started to build and crossed the road right in front me. I got the shot and headed home to see what I had. I saw this image and thought I may have something here? I called ABC wfaa and they pretty much hung up on me. I emailed Dallas morning news a couple of proofs and didn’t expect anything back. Probably 45 seconds after I sent the email, I got a call back! They asked me to come into the office. We worked out a deal and they tweeted the photo. I spent the rest of the day in one of their cubicles answering phone calls from news organizations about the picture. The next day my photo was 4 columns wide on the front page (last time that happened was when the Mavericks won it all). It also made front pages of Wall Street journal, Washington post, and many more. I also had a goofy CNN interview lol. That same day TIME called me! It ended up getting printed two pages wide in April and ended up making their top ten photos of 2012 list in the End of the year edition of TIME! I’ll never forget those two days!!#6 Dave Pluimer (232 Likes)
