Lightning Photography Spotlight: “Crackle”

There are several techniques to capturing lightning and I have tried them all in my years of storm chasing. While it is still difficult to capture lightning at night, capturing a day time strike can be very challenging. This particular storm near Sterling Colorado was very intense. It was one of the most electric storms I have ever witnessed. Capturing a lightning bolt was not going to be difficult, but it was during the day so I wanted to make sure I had all of my camera settings in the right place. I chose a technique called stacking for this photo. While you can stack hundreds of pictures if you want, I only needed to use two images for this shot. So much lightning was occurring at this moment I literally snapped the lens twice and got an amazing group of bolts.
