Probably the best shelf cloud I’ve seen in 25 years of sailing on the Great Lakes……July 25, 2011 as the SS Wilfred Sykes approaches Mackinac Island on northern Lake Huron in the Straits of Mackinac.

This spectacular shelf cloud was observed on Sunday May 11th 2014 when we were escaping in front of strong southwards surging cold front. A persisting nicely layered shelf cloud formed along the frontal squall line and brought quite a lot of rain and winds around the gulf of Trieste.
