Had a lot of fun working on lightning research this year, but excited that it’s over for now, and I can finally get back to focusing on taking photos of it. Heading out tomorrow for a few days for some late monsoon season storms, with my friend Gary Schmitt. Should have some new work to share with y’all soon. For now, here’s a shot from July 19, 2012 in Christmas, Florida. f/13 1/20th second ISO 100

“Fire in the Sky” Another shot from yesterday’s morning photoshoot. One of the best rainbows I’ve ever had the privilege of filming. To all the new photographers out there…It doesn’t matter what kind of camera you own, Nikon or Canon or Fuji or whatever. What does matter is Location, Location, Location….and Magic Hour! Dawn and Dusk. Especially when there are thunderstorms around! You HAVE to put yourself out there! Look closely and you can see the other end of the rainbow!

June 18th would offer the most unusual sunset I have ever seen. Behind severe storms the sky turned deep pink/purple as the air aloft was full of smoke and haze. This was actually looking ESE. Taken in Spring Arbor MI.

I took this picture a couple of months ago near Walla Walla, WA. It was a severe-warned thunderstorm and we witnessed some weak rotation, but were a great distance away to be 100% sure about what developed. Tornado? Gustnado? Scud? It lasted a few minutes and then wrapped up.
