A dip in the jet stream will allow the coldest air of the season to come down into parts of the Central United States starting mid-week. A cold front will move through the Southern Plains by Friday December 6th bringing winter along with it. Dangerous life threatening temperatures will be in place over parts of the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota and Nebraska. With lows and wind chills reaching from -20 to -40 degrees. While sub freezing temperatures will exist in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas and parts of Texas. Snow will also be a major issue with accumulations of 6 inches plus already in place in the Dakota’s and Montana. By Friday light to moderate snow can be expected in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Nebraska and Wyoming. The heaviest snow for the Southern plains and Mississippi Valley will be in Missouri and Arkansas with the potential for 6 inches plus in Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas. Ice will also be an issue in Southern Oklahoma, Central and Southern Arkansas and Northern Texas through Friday. This storm will depart but it looks as though another system will be right behind it for next week. Winter is back in a big way! If you live in these areas please take this seriously. These type of temperatures are deadly if you are exposed for even a short amount of time. If you have to drive in these locations, please use caution.
A Winter Storm Warning is already in place for much of the Dakotas and the Rockies. A Winter Storm Watch is in place for parts of Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. The watch will likely be moved to a warning and increase in size to the SE and into Missouri.
