From the earliest days of digital photography (my first digital lightning photo, to boot!). On an ancient Olympus D40z. I was lucky enough to be told to come after this cell by Scott Blair after I’d nearly given the chase up for good (oh, the old days of no real-time radar, and heading to hotels to see if they had the Weather Channel up…) This vault-illuminating lightning strike shot out of the updraft streaking across the anvil. This tornadic thunderstorm with magnificent structure missed Pampa, TX, by only a few miles on 5/23/2002. Jim Leonard and I got to meet up that evening at an ice cream store and savored the victory. This one’s for you, Jim! f/4, 6 sec, ISO 100
