Follow Mark April 18, 2013. 3:30 am. US Highway 24 just West of Rushville, IL. I was shooting lightning strikes about a half mile down the road from the end of my driveway when this bolt struck about 150 feet away. It vaporized a big puddle of rainwater where it struck. I heard a sound like frying bacon above me and then the simultaneous strike and boom of the thunder. I was temporarily blinded and fearing another strike, I grabbed my tripod and camera with the next shot still firing and ran for the “safety” of my front porch. I was astounded that I actually got a shot since it was so bright. Since I was shooting RAW, I was able to dial the exposure down and contrast up to reveal what it actually looked like. Nikon D7000 18-70 lens @ 34mm ISO 200 f/5.6 15 sec

Follow Mike Tornadic supercell and funnel at sunset near Pampa, TX on Monday evening. This storm went from a high based mess to a funnel dropping machine in about 20 minutes. While we didn’t witness a tornado touch down until after dark, this cell along with a couple of others coming up from the southwest went on to produce numerous tornadoes in the area. Epic structure and and epic night for a November storm chase!
